Santos Rosewood
Santos rosewood, of the species Machaerium scleroxylon, is a wood of many names, but is best known as pau ferro, Bolivian rosewood, morado, and Santos rosewood. It is a beautiful medium brown wood with dark brown streaks and a hint of orange.
Santos rosewood is often used as a substitute for Brazilian rosewood. It has seen rising popularity, and is now considered a valuable wood in its own right. It is often used to make musical instruments, fine furniture, cabinetry, and specialty items.
Santos rosewood grows mostly in Brazil and Bolivia. It can reach heights of up to 100 feet, with a trunk size of 3 to 5 feet in diameter, but usually remains much smaller. The tree is beautiful, especially the marbled trunk, and is often planted as an ornamental.
