5th Anniversary: A Milestone to Celebrate
The fifth anniversary is the first milestone anniversary. No longer newlyweds, the couple’s love has had time to take root and grow. The traditional gift for this special anniversary is wood. Wood is strong, durable, and warm. Its strength has been used throughout history to build homes, furniture, boats, and more. Its use reaches back into the deepest past, when its fire kept us warm and alive. The source of wood is the tree, which is symbolically important, with its many intertwining roots providing nourishment and a solid foundation for a long life.
The fifth anniversary celebrates a couple’s five years of challenges and adventures, of hopes, dreams, and of growing love and friendship. The gift of a wooden ring commemorates this special time, symbolizing a growing and enduring relationship.
Choose from our collection of wood rings, made in various styles, from simple to elaborate. Or, add an extra meaningful touch by sending us your own piece of wood to be used in your ring.

The History Of Anniversary Gift Giving
The history of anniversary gift giving dates back centuries. There are sources that point to Ancient Rome and Medieval Germany as the root of the tradition, but it is difficult to find direct evidence of gift giving that far back in time. However, there is mention of anniversary gift giving in the Middle Ages in the Germanic region. During this time, a silver wreath would be given to a wife after 25 years of marriage, and a gold wreath after 50 years. It’s not until the 18th and 19th century that more direct evidence can be found.
For example, a brief description from The Farmer’s Almanac of 1859 states:
“One month from marriage makes a sugar wedding; one year makes a paper wedding; five years, a wooden wedding; ten years, a tin wedding; twenty-five years, a silver wedding; fifty years, a golden wedding; and seventy-five years, a diamond wedding.” This edition of the Farmer’s Almanac makes it clear that the gift giving tradition surrounding the major anniversaries was already established by the mid 19th century.
This makes sense based on the values of the Victorian era, which saw the rise of the “love match”, when love became the main reason for a couple to marry. Traditionalists of the time were upset by this idea, arguing that love was not enough to keep a couple married. And so an emphasis was placed on building commitment in the relationship, and anniversary gift giving was a natural extension of that.
The Modern Era
By the early 20th century, more exhaustive lists of wedding anniversary gifts were created. The years between the milestone anniversaries were filled in, and the traditional gifts became well established. Since then, modernized lists have been created. Perhaps the most famous of these is by a group of librarians at the Chicago Public Library in the year 2000. Their modern 5th year anniversary gift is silverware, so if you’d prefer not to get a traditional gift made from wood, consider silverware instead.
