Accurately determining someone else’s ring size is not always easy. This is especially the case when buying an engagement ring, where the element of surprise is important.

Some of the rings that we make incorporate materials or are designed in a way that makes resizing more challenging or not feasible (for example, full eternity bands). If you are buying a wooden engagement ring or moissanite engagement ring from us, feel free to contact us to find out if there are any resizing limitations on the ring that you are looking to order.

We also offer 1 free resize with all of our rings, which includes those that are more difficult or impossible to resize, in which case we remake the ring for you from scratch. See our policies page for more info on resizing.

Okay, so you are ready to ask the big question, but you have absolutely no idea what her ring size is. We have posted a few ideas below that may help you determine her size.

TIPS FOR FINDING OUT HER RING SIZE

Enlist the help of friends or family:

A good starting place is to ask her family and friends if they happen to know her size. You can order her ring based on this information alone, but for a more accurate result ask a close friend of hers to take her out shopping; while shopping, the friend can lure her into a jewelry store to try on some rings.

Have one of her rings sized by a jeweler:

This is usually an accurate way of determining her ring size. If you know that she wears a particular ring on her ring finger, do your best to secretly borrow it, and bring it to a jeweler. Ask the jeweler to measure the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters. It is common for the fingers of the left and right hand to measure slightly differently from one another, so measuring a ring that she already wears on her left ring finger will provide the best results.

Have her try on rings:

You can pretend that you are looking to buy a ring for a family member, and ask her for her input. She may naturally reveal her own ring size, or you may be able to coax it out of her. Or, purchase your “family member” an inexpensive ring and show it to her, she may try it on. If it fits, great. If not, you will have a better idea of an approximate size.

Ask her:

Some couples discuss marriage before getting engaged, with both partners knowing that it is only a matter of time. She will know the big question is coming if you ask for her ring size, but that doesn’t mean that a romantic proposal is out of the question. You can still choose a time and place that will pleasantly surprise her.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Most of the methods outlined above will give an approximation of her ring size. The most accurate way of determining someone’s ring size is to be sized by at least two jewelers. Check out our sizing post to see the best way to be sized.

If you are uncertain of her exact ring size, it is better to err on the side of caution, and order a ring that is a bit too big instead of a bit too small. Not only will this ensure that the ring slips over her knuckle, but any resizing that is done will be easier because:

  • when a ring is too large and needs to be sized down, a piece of metal is removed and the gap is soldered or welded closed. Sizing down is easier, less time consuming, and costs less than sizing up.
  • when a ring is too small and needs to be sized up, a piece of metal must be added to the band and then soldered or welded on both sides of the added piece of metal. Sizing up is more difficult, more time consuming, and costs more.

If surprise is not important, we recommend that you add our free ring sizers to your cart when ordering her ring. The sizers can be used to double check that her size is true, and you can rest easy knowing that the ring you order from us will fit the same as our sizers.
